Discover Prado

Photos, information and travel guides for your stay.

The Museo del Prado, officially known as Museo Nacional del Prado, is the main Spanish national art museum, located in central Madrid. It houses collections of European art, dating from the 12th century to the early 20th century, based on the former Spanish royal collection, and is the single best collection of Spanish art. Founded as a museum of paintings and sculpture in 1819, it also contains important collections of other types of works. The numerous works by Francisco Goya, the single most extensively represented artist, as well as by Hieronymus Bosch, El Greco, Peter Paul Rubens, Titian, and Diego Velázquez, are some of the highlights of the collection. Velázquez and his keen eye and sensibility were also responsible for bringing much of the museum's fine collection of Italian masters to Spain, now one of the largest outside of Italy.

One of the main attractions of Prado is its beautiful beaches, which offer miles of pristine sand and crystal clear waters. Whether you're looking to relax in the sun or take a dip in the ocean, there's no shortage of places to do so in this coastal paradise. Some of the most popular beaches in the area include Praia do Novo Prado, Praia do Tororão, and Praia do Farol.

Aside from its natural beauty, Prado is also home to a number of fascinating historical landmarks. One such site is the Casa da Cultura, which was once the home of a prominent local family and now serves as a museum showcasing the town's rich cultural heritage. Other must-see attractions include the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Purificação, a stunning 18th-century church, and the Forte de Prado, a historic fort that played a key role in the region's colonial history.
